In political and legal meeting of the CPC Central Committee, held in Beijing on January 15-16, 2018, Party Secretary-general Xi Jinping made an important speech in which he gave a comprehensive and scientific summarization of the achievements made and experiences gained by the CPC in the political and legal work since the Eighteenth Party Congress and analyzed in a deep-going way the opportunities and challenges faced and specified the main tasks to be accomplished by CPC in the political and legal work in a new era. Party Secretary-general Xi Jinping’s important speech has caused strong reaction from all sectors of society. Recently the newspaper Guangming Daily interviewed a number of experts and scholars, including Professor Liu Renwen, Head of the Criminal Law Department of CASS Law Institute, about Xi’s speech. In the interviews, the experts and scholars discussed the significance of the speech and expressed their opinions on the main issues touched upon in the speech, including the outline for the political and legal work in a new era, the modernization of social governance, and the deep integration of technological innovation and judicial work. Professor Liu Renwen pointed out that: “Party Secretary-General emphasized innovation many times in the speech, demanding political and legal officials ‘to combine the fine tradition of the Party and new technologies and methods”, advance in a deep-going way innovative community governance, and construct a vigorous and efficient new-type social governance system’. With the change of social structure, political and legal workers should give full play to rapidly developing technologies, so as to act appropriately to the situation and be objectives-oriented in their work.
