The Seminar on “Social Changes and a New Era Criminal Law Science” was held in Beijing on October 27-28, 2018. The seminar, sponsored by CASS Law Institute and organized by the Criminal Law Department of CASS Law Institute, was held in commemoration of the 40th anniversary of the reform and opening up in China and the 60th anniversary of the establishment of CASS Law Institute. It was attended by about 100 representatives, including scholars from such universities and research institutions as Peking University, Renmin University of China, China University of Political Science and Law, Beijing Normal University, University of International Business and Economics, Beijing Foreign Studies University, Beijing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Minzu University of China, Beijing Union University, Jilin University, Nanjing University, Sichuan University, Chongqing University, Liaoning University, Zhengzhou University, Ningbo University, Southwest University of Finance and Economics, Suzhou University, Henan University, Hebei University, Shanxi University, Nanchang University, Heilongjiang University, Hainan University, Zhejiang University of Technology, Zhejiang University of Finance and Economics, Shenzhen University, Qingdao University, Jianggangshan University, Hangzhou Normal University, Tianjin Polytechnic University, Jimei University, Shanghai University of Political Science and Law, Shandong University of Political Science and Law, Henan Procurators’ College, Law Institute of Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences, and Law Institute of Jiangxi Academy of Social Sciences, officials and experts from the Legislative Affairs Commission of the Standing Committee of People’s Congress, the Supreme People’s Court, the Supreme People’s Procuratorate, the Ministry of Public Security, the Ministry of Justice, and Beijing People’s Procuratorate, and reporters and editors from such mass media as Legal Daily, Procuratorial Daily, People’s Court Daily, China Social Sciences Today, China Legal Science, Chinese Journal of Law and Global Law Review.

At the seminar, which was divided into seven units, the participants gave speeches and carried out discussion on a wide range of issues around the following topics: social changes and the evolution of criminal law outlook;social changes and the development of criminal law system; legislation and judicial practice relating to the crime of corruption in the forty years since the reform and opening-up; the face of criminal law in the Internet era; artificial intelligence, big data and the criminal law; criminal law regulation ofinformation in cyberspace; and criminal law intervention in the risk society.
