The Seminar on “Rule of Law and Academic Responsibilities: the Construction of the Legal Science System in New China” was held in the Academic Lecture Hall of CASS in Beijing on October 28, 2018. It was organized by CASS Law Institute in celebration of the 60th anniversary of its establishment.

At the opening ceremony, presided over by Professor Chen Su, Director of CASS Law Institute, Professor Xi Fuzhan, the President of CASS, Ms. Xin Chunying, Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee of the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress, Professor Li Peilin, Vice Chairman of CASS, Professor Zhang Wenxian, Vice Chairman of China Law Society, and Professor Mo Jihong, Deputy Director of CASS Law Institute, each gave an opening speech.

At the seminar, also presided over by Professor Chen Su, Professor Liu Hainian and Professor Li Lin, two former directors of CASS Law Institute, reviewed past 60 years of development of CASS Law Institute.

In his speech, Professor Sun Xianzhong, a member CASS, discussed the academic and social responsibilities of CASS Law Institute and researchers of the Institute.

Professor Zhou Hanhua, assistant director of CASS Law Institute, pointed out in his speech that the great practice of ruling the country by law in a comprehensive way and the overall arrangements made by the CPC Central Committee for speeding up the construction of the legal science in China has provided a rare historical opportunity for the development of legal research in China. In order to speed up the advancement of legal research, legal researchers at CASS Law Institute must adhere to Chinese characteristics while embodying the spirit of innovation.

Professor Li Hong, Party Secretary of the Law School of Tsinghua University, reviewed the close cooperation between CASS Law Institute and his law school.

Professor Chen Zexian, former director of CASS Institute of International Law, reviewed the history of establishment and development of CASS Law Institute and CASS Institute of International Law and the close relationship between the two institutes.

The seminar was attended by leaders and experts of CASS, the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress, China Law Society, the State Council, and University of CASS, scholars from various universities, and representatives from publishing houses and law firms and covered by over a dozen news media, including People’s Daily, Xinhua News Agency, Guangming Daily, Legal Daily, People’s Court Daily, People’s Procuratorate Daily, and Tencent.
