Professor Xiong Qiuhong Attends the Fifth Criminal Law Forum of Southwest University of Political Science and Law: “40 Years of Criminal Defense: Problems and Prospect”

The Fifth Criminal Law Forum of Southwest University of Political Science and Law: “40 Years of Criminal Defense: Problems and Prospect”, sponsored by the Center for Procedural Law and judicial Reform Studies of Southwest University of Political Science and Law, was successfully held in Chongqing on May 25, 2019. The seminar, which took “40 Years of Criminal Defense: Problems and Prospect” as its theme, was attended by over 60 experts and scholars from courts, procuratorates, law firms, universities and research institutions throughout the country.

At the seminar, which was divided into three units, the participants gave speeches and carried out discussions on various issues around such topics as effective defense in the Chinese context, the structure and function of defense at the stage of investigation and the transition of lawyer’s defense against the background of “Imposing Lenient Punishments on Those Confessing to Their Crimes and Accepting Punishments in Criminal Cases”.

Professor Xiong Qiuhong, a research fellow at CASS Law Institute, gave a speech at the first unit of the seminar, in which she discussed such issues as the basis of legitimacy of the right to defense, the concept of effective defense in broad and narrow senses, and how to carry out effective defense in the Chinese context. At the end of the seminar, Professor Xiong gave a concluding remark, in which she summarized the various issues discussed at the seminar.
